Black Friday Panic

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Everyone has been talking about Black Friday and how all the stores are having crazy sale prices on expense things. I see ads for laptops for $189 and huge flat screen TVs for only $300 or $400. So everyone is supposed to get up at some ridiculous hour, like 1:00 am, and go stand in line and spend all our Christmas money today.

Not me! Count me out. I will shop when I have time, and Christmas is still a month away. I don’t want to do my shopping today and then have nothing to look forward to for the rest of the month before the holiday. I intend to enjoy the entire holiday season and to stay within my budget when I go shopping.

And it is not about me wanting a big screen TV, which I don’t. It is about taking time and thinking through the entire gift buying experience. Not a mad dash to WalMart to save $100 on expensive electronics that should be priced low all the time anyway.

Totally Crowded

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

I know this is the week before Thanksgiving and I know that people are wanting to stock up on groceries for the holiday dinner. But, seriously, the crowd at the grocery store this afternoon was totally crazy. I could not believe how crowded the aisles were. There were old people in scooters, babies in strollers, gangs of college kids and a variety of other ages all pushing their way down the aisles grabbing food and paper products off the shelves.

It took way too long to work my way through the store and then I had to stand in line for almost 30 minutes to even check out. I felt like I was doing battle to just buy my few items and get out of there!

To the point

I can remember a few years ago when we were planning our move across country that we were concerned with the house removal costs that we were going to have to spend.  It was really time consuming trying to get price quotes from all of the different companies that perform house removal services.  And it is hard to keep up with all of the fine print and terms and conditions.  There were several times when I would find a website that gave me the impression that I would get immediate rate quotes by filling out the form, and I fell victim to those sites more than once.  I wanted immediate quotes!

But most of those sites were a come-on where after I filled in all of the information required to get a quote, I would then get a screen that told me that company representatives would contact me to discuss it further.  That was so annoying!  I felt that I had given them all of the information that they needed, and the only reason that they wanted to call me was to give them the opportunity to use high-pressure sales tactics on me to close the deal with their company.  I’ve been having that kind of experience lately on a lot of other services too!  I hate those kinds of misleading sites!

Some people are just plan obnoxious

My hubby and I were running errands in town today and we got hungry. We decided to go to the local Diner. The Diner has been a local icon for a very long time. I don’t go there very often, but I’ve never had a bad meal there. My hubby loves their food, and goes there frequently. So we decided to go and have lunch. On the doors and windows there are very obvious signs that advise the customers that they do not accept any form of payment other than cash. We sat behind a couple that were complaining that their food wasn’t up to their expectations. The waitress got them replacement meals, and followed up a few minutes later to ask them if the meal was OK. They said it was fine now.

A few minutes later, their replacement meals half-eaten, they asked for their check and tried to pay for their meal with a credit card. They complained that the replacement meals still weren’t good. The waitress explained that they had to pay by cash. They got very vocal and said that they didn’t have any cash. The waitress told them that there was an ATM in the entrance way. I didn’t hear it all, but there was a lot of pointing and loud voices on the part of the customers, and then they left (without paying) saying that they’d be back to pay for their meal. They drove away in a brand new Lexus. A few minutes later they returned and complained about the food again (and the cost) and paid their bill and loudly said they’d never be back.

Everyone else in the Diner told the waitress several times that we all thought the food was wonderful. We left her a pretty big tip, too.

Where is the Remote?

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

When I am cleaning up the living room, I always come across the remote in an odd place and have to put it on the TV stand. I don’t know why I seem to be the only one in the house capable of placing the remote on the TV stand where it belongs.

I don’t even like the remote. I can often just reach across tot he controls on the TV and take care of changing the channel or increasing the volume directly on the TV set rather than searching for the remote and then sitting on my duff pointing a little beam of light toward the cable box.

Today, I cannot find the remote at all. I have cleaned up and looked under everything. It’s not in the living room anywhere. No great loss to me, but I am sure hubby will be quite distressed later tonight when he wants to watch TV.
