What a weekend!

Monday, June 16th, 2008

My goodness gracious, what a weekend of news it has been!  Every time I turn on the news, something is actually being covered other than the presidential election!

Big news of the weekend included Tim Russert dying of cardiac arrest.  All weekend long, and into today that seems to be the biggest news story, everyone is talking about Tim Russert and what a great guy he was.  I enjoyed watching his Meet The Press show, and I’m sorry he’s dead.  My sympathies to his family.

Other news, a big prison break in Afghanistan, releasing hundreds of Taliban terrorist prisoners.  Not a happy thought that we now have more of them running around ready to commit suicide bombings around the world!

And a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Japan.  I’ve only heard of six fatalities, which is amazing to me.  I would have thought more casualties would have happened from a quake that large!

Glad this weekend is over!  We don’t need that much going on!

Roads and bridges flooded out

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I have to admit that I am quite surprised how quickly to roads and bridges flood around here.  It does not seem that we get all that much rain to be having that happen!  But every single time it rains, when I go out driving, it seems that I see lots of areas where the road has flooded over.  And every time it rains and I’m driving a bus, I hear on the radio that other drivers can’t get to where they need to go because their road or bridge has flooded.  I don’t understand the poor engineering that has allowed this situation to exist!

Saw a bad accident today

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

On my afternoon bus run, taking the high schoolers (and middle schoolers) home, we came across an accident that had just happened.  No police or rescue squad had arrived yet.  A car was on its side, the driver and passengers were climbing out of the windows.  There were several people who had run to help them out (I was glad for that.)  I don’t think anyone was killed or seriously hurt.  My students were all totally freaked out.  I had to find a detour to get the kids home as the accident was totally blocking the road.  The kids got home ok, although they were disturbed about the detour.

I haven’t been able to verify this…..

Yesterday I had to attend a meeting during my bus route shifts.  It was a continuing education thing that is required by law.  Anyway, our boss conducted the meeting and showed us a few videos that we had seen during our initial training.  Before the videos, though the was talking to us about safety in general.  He was encouraging us to keep our cars locked at all times.

He claimed that recently there was an incident where a lady went to a local gas station and went inside to pre-pay for her purchase in cash.  When she got up to the cashier, the cashier pointed to her car and asked “is that your car?”  When she replied “yes” the cashier said “don’t get in your car, I just saw a man climb into the back seat!”

They called the police, and the police captured and arrested the man that was crouching in the back seat.  The man told the police that he was participating in a gang initiation where he was supposed to kill the lady that was driving the car!  I’ve been trying to find out via Google if there was any coverage of the incident, and have not had any luck at all.  But, I think that our boss wouldn’t make that up, so I believe him!  Anyway, it was very scary and I want everyone to lock all their doors all the time!

Consumer credit woes in the news a lot

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

It seems that every time I turn on the news, there are stories about the economy, and consumer credit.  And every time I get the mail from our mailbox, there are offers for credit cards, Personal Loans, and payday loans.

With the price of gas going up, the trickle down effect is making the price of everything go up.  Everything but our paychecks!  It is becoming more difficult for the average family to make ends meet, and more people are turning to credit companies for loans to help them.

There are finance companies on the Internet that have dedicated themselves to helping people find the financing that they need, they run the whole gamut of financing options, from personal loans, bad credit loans, and No Fax Payday Loans.  One of these companies, http://www.completeloansource.com is a national finance service that offers a wide variety of those types of services.  This website is a good resource for learning about different options.
