Askismet comes standard on Wordrpesses which means you do not have to download a plugin and activating it requires you to have a Wordpress.com account or a friend, then you can the API key to activate this anti spam plugin which will save you hours if not days of not having to delete spam over the life of your blog. Probably the best plugin made for Wordpress in my opinion.
